We built Gmail Notification to keep you informed — not to collect your data. Here's exactly what we do and don't do.
This Privacy Policy describes how the Gmail Notification Chrome extension ("the extension", "we", "our") handles information when you use it. By installing the extension you agree to this policy.
The extension's sole purpose is to display your Gmail unread count as a badge on the browser toolbar and to let you preview recent emails in a popup — without leaving your current tab.
Effective date: June 2025 · Last updated: June 2025The extension reads data from Gmail's Atom feed (mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom) — a standard, publicly documented feed that Gmail has provided for years. From this feed we access:
This data is fetched using your existing browser session (cookies). We never ask for, store, or transmit your Google password or any authentication credentials.
| Data type | Collected | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | Local only | Shown in popup to identify accounts; never sent to any server. |
| Unread count, subject, sender, snippet | Local only | Fetched from Gmail Atom feed; stored in local browser cache only. |
| User settings | Local only | Check interval, sounds, DND times etc. — stored in chrome.storage.local. |
| Anonymous analytics ID | Collected | A randomly generated ID (no name, no email) sent to Amplitude to measure installs and errors. |
| Passwords / credentials | Never | We never read, request, or store authentication credentials. |
| Full email body | Never | Only the short snippet exposed by the Atom feed is read. |
| Browsing history | Never | The floating button script does not record which pages you visit. |
| Financial / health data | Never | Not applicable. |
The extension requests only the permissions required to deliver its features:
Schedules periodic checks of your Gmail unread count at the interval you choose.
Detects if Gmail is already open so the extension focuses it instead of opening a duplicate tab.
Displays optional desktop notifications (sender + subject) when new mail arrives, if you enable this.
Saves your preferences (sound, interval, Do Not Disturb hours) locally in your browser.
Creates a hidden page solely to play notification sounds — Manifest V3 service workers cannot play audio directly.
Injects the optional floating quick-access button into webpages (opt-in, can be disabled in options).
Injects the floating button into your current tab when you change settings, without requiring broad host access.
Required to fetch the Gmail Atom feed — the core function of the extension.
We use Amplitude to collect anonymous, aggregate usage data. This helps us fix bugs and understand which features matter most. Specifically:
No analytics data is sold or shared with any third party beyond Amplitude (our analytics processor). Amplitude's own privacy policy is available at amplitude.com/privacy.
We do not sell, rent, or trade any data about you. We do not share any data with advertisers. The only third-party processor is Amplitude for anonymous analytics (described above).
Your email content (subject, sender, snippet) is never transmitted outside your browser. It lives only in chrome.storage.local on your device and is cleared when you uninstall the extension.
The extension does not load or execute JavaScript from any external URL. All scripts are bundled inside the extension package and reviewed as part of every release. This means no third party can change what code runs in your browser without a published extension update.
This extension is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children. If you believe a child has used this extension and you have concerns, please contact us (see below).
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the effective date at the top and, where appropriate, provide notice through the extension itself or the Chrome Web Store listing.
Continued use of the extension after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
